چکیده

The results of a joint experimental and theoretical study concerning elastic electron scattering by laser-excited 138Ba(. . . 6s6p P1) atoms are described. These studies demonstrate several important aspects of elastic electron collisions with coherently excited atoms, and are the first such studies. From the measurements, collision and coherence parameters, as well as cross sections associated with an atomic ensemble prepared with an arbitrary in-plane laser geometry and linear polarization (with respect to the collision frame), or equivalently with any magnetic sublevel superposition, have been obtained at 20 eV impact energy and at 10◦, 15◦ and 20◦ scattering angles. The convergent close-coupling (CCC) method was used within the non-relativistic LS-coupling framework to calculate the magnetic sublevel scattering amplitudes. From these amplitudes all the parameters and cross sections at 20 eV impact energy were extracted in the full angular range in 1◦ steps. The experimental and theoretical results were found to be in good agreement, indicating that the CCC method can be reliably applied to elastic scattering by 138Ba(. . . 6s6p P1) atoms, and possibly to other heavy elements when spin–orbit coupling effects are negligible. Small but significant asymmetry was observed in the cross sections for scattering to the left and to the right. It was also found that elastic electron scattering by the initially isotropic atomic ensemble resulted in the creation of significant alignment. As a byproduct of the present studies, elastic scattering cross sections for metastable 138Ba atoms were also obtained.

Superelastic electron scattering within a magnetic angle changer: determination of the angular momentum transferred during electron excitation over all scattering angles.

By utilizing superelastic electron scattering from laser-excited atoms within a new magnetic angle changing device, the differential cross sections for excitation of atoms by electron impact over the complete scattering geometry are determined for the first time. In the experiments described here, these techniques are combined to reveal the angular momentum transferred to calcium atoms during e...

Superelastic scattering with imperfect laser polarization

The formalism applied to superelastic electron scattering from laser-excited atoms has to date assumed perfect polarization of the laser light. We consider the effects of imperfect polarization, deriving an expression for the superelastic scattering rate from target atoms optically pumped with elliptically polarized light, and show how imperfect polarization effects can be measured and minimize...

Electron-atom superelastic scattering in magnesium at millielectron volt energies.

The energy dependence of superelastic scattering is measured for electrons on Mg(3(1)P) from threshold to 270 meV with a novel technique. The method uses photoelectrons produced by a narrow bandwidth laser as an approximately monoenergetic incident electron source to collide with excited atoms. Measurements are made at energies as low as 1.5 meV with a resolution of 1 meV near threshold. An eff...

Frequency shifts of photoassociative spectra of ultracold metastable Helium atoms : a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length

– We observe light-induced frequency shifts in one-color photoassociative spectra of magnetically trapped He atoms in the metastable 2S1 state. A pair of ultracold spinpolarized 2S1 helium atoms is excited into a molecular bound state in the purely long range 0+u potential connected to the 2 S1−2 P0 asymptote. The shift arises from the optical coupling of the molecular excited bound state with ...
